The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Mozambique started in 1989 by workers of the Lutheran World Services who were doing relief work in the country.Today the Church is divided into three districts that is; the Central district comprising of Beira, Chimoio and Tete, the Northern districts comprising of Nampula, Moma, Namina and Cabo-delgado and the Southern districts comprising of Chibuto Chokwe, Gaza and Maputo.In 1999, the Church had a membership of 1,250 parishioners and by 2006; its membership has increased to 7,392 worshipers in the 60 congregations. Currently there are 4 ordained pastors, 4 evangelists and 6 deacons who minister to the 7, 392 worshipers. The Church is headed by a Senior Pastor, Rev. Jose Mabosso and the Rev. Dean Hendricks Mavunduse from the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Zimbabwe (ELCZ) acts as the advisor to the Senior Pastor. The Church is governed by a 11-member Church Council which meets four-times a year and is elected by the Church Assembly which meets once every four-years. The Senior Pastor chairs both the Council and the Assembly. Worship services in the congregations are conducted in Portuguese and other local languages.
